If there’s one thing I love, it’s wine. If there’s another, it’s friends. If there’s a third, it’s social media.
Of the three, the one I love but am not that familiar with is wine. Which is okay, because Gary Vee is here to help me out.
Who’s Gary Vee? Gary Vaynerchuck is the host of Wine Library TV, one of the most popular wine shows on the internet.
Last night, I was lucky enough to be in the room as my man Dmitri Gunn hosted a taping of the Thunder Show by Gary Vaynerchuk at the Hotel Commonwealth. After the taping, there was a Q&A and wine tasting, then an after-party sponsored by Mzinga.
What I think is worth typing about is what I feel is the most important part of the night. These are Tweets I sent from my cellphone during the event:
“Shoulda grabbed a seat earlier.” The place was PACKED, and after socializing, I ended up halfway back from the front. No chances for a good photo. (That’s why I stole the photo above from Steve Garfield)
“Holy crap, this guy knows wine.” This goes without saying, yet still needs to be said.
“Hammer & sickle, bitches!” Gary’s very proud of his Belarusian heritage.
“My community is all. I. do.” Countless hours are spent replying to emails. The man is an animal of dedication to his fans. Are you involved in social media? Pay attention to this one.
“My appreciation for this country and this opportunity is immense.” Coming from Eastern Europe, Gary recognizes the opportunity living in the US has afforded him, and doesn’t take it for granted.
And probably his biggest lesson of his show, his book, and the night:
The only way to learn about wine is to drink it.
I met a lot of new people, and reconnected with a lot of people I’d already met. Yes, there were too many to mention, that’s why I don’t mention specific names. If you follow me on Twitter, you saw me say hi to all of them.
Gary, it was great meeting you. You truly are an inspiration for how social media should work. Watch out, though. Now that I’ve started @garyvee’ing, I may not stop, whether you like it. or. not.
