The problem with doing one meme is you have a hard time saying no to more.
After sitting on it for nearly a month, I’m caving and following Shelley Greenberg, aka The Spotted Duck‘s lead and taking part in the “Sixth-Photo Meme”. After all, how can I refuse Shelley?
The meme is simple: Go to the sixth page of your Flickr photo stream, take the sixth photo on that page and post it into your blog.
Easy enough, I can do that.

This photo was taken during the six days I spent in Vancouver with Meg. (I know, I’ve been back for two weeks and haven’t written about it yet. Bad Gradon!)
This building is on Hastings St in downtown Vancouver. I took the photo as Meg and I were walking out of Mink: A Chocolate Cafe across the street. The building is a wonderful example of Brutalist architecture, a style of building highlighted by “striking repetitive angular geometries, and where concrete is used often revealing the texture of the wooden forms used for the in-situ casting”
Brutalism was popular from the late-50s to the mid-70s. As time goes on, this style is less popular with the citizenry than other, softer styles. As an architecture geek, I like the style for that rawness, and for the time-specific quality of the design – there’s no confusing this with something from the 19th century.
Since I did this meme, it’s only right to bring others into it. Without further ado, my tagged five: Meg Fowler (she of no memes), Brett Petersel, Aaron Strout, Kabren Frostig Levinson, and Emma Devlin.
Let’s see those photos!

I’ve been tagged on this one a few times, actually. And ironically, it’s a picture of Boston architecture, so I could write a mirror post.
Read it and weep!

Yay for memes, yay for Vancouver, but no yay for brutalism. Have you SEEN the BU Law building (eyesore on the Charles)?! Blech.
