The Social Media Dance Mix

On Twitter earlier tonight, Elisabeth McLaury Lewin (aka @podcastmama), Stefania Butler (aka @citymama) and I were extolling the virtues of early electronica (like Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode), ambient (Brian Eno, Klaus Schulze), and early rave music (The Orb, Orbital).

All energized from talking about some of my favorite music, I stayed up and made the Social Media Dance Mix. Every group in the mix, save Massive Attack, was mentioned in our conversation (I added Massive Attack because I needed one more song!).

Have a listen:

We all agree, music from back then was way better than what’s around now. (Of course, my parents said the same thing about their music – and they were right!)

Never been an electronica fan, why do you prefer the past over the present? I’m not a fan of hip hop, for instance, and today’s rap is heavily ingrained with R&B and hip hop. But I like old-school rap: Beastie Boys, RUN DMC, etc. New rap is…no.

Electronica?

Hi Ari, I don’t think a blog comment is the right venue for me to expand on my musical trigonometry that argues quality is relative to how close to the beginnings of that genre you can get.

Next time we meet, we’ll talk about music. I’m a fan of old school hip-hop as well, but also newer, less popular stuff. I’ll be posting more about music in by Bands to Help Brands series throughout January.
